Manggaige Ham (We are Here) Crisis Counseling Program

MANGGAIGE HAM (WE ARE HERE)

On May 28, 2023, Guam received a Presidential disaster declaration for individual assistance for Typhoon Mawar.

Crisis Counseling (CCP) was awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to Guam Behavioral Health and Wellness Center (GBHWC) to provide crisis counseling services to the survivors of Typhoon Mawar.

The CCP is a short-term disaster relief grant for states, U.S. territories, and federally recognized tribes. CCP funding supports community-based outreach, counseling, and other mental health services to survivors of natural and human-caused disasters by helping disaster survivors understand their current situation and reactions, reducing stress and providing emotional support, assisting survivors in reviewing their disaster recovery options, promoting the use or development of coping strategies, and connecting survivors with other people and agencies who can help them in their recovery process.

With the implementation of the CCP, Crisis Counselors will conduct face-to-face outreach to the most affected areas on the island with ongoing needs assessments. CCP will provide brief educational or supportive contact, individual counseling, group counseling, public education, assessment, referral, resource linkages, community network, support, and distribution of educational materials, media, and public service announcements. The Manggaige Ham Crisis Counselors will provide emotional support, public information, and referrals to calls through the 671-647-0170/0171, available Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
