ASIST is an important part of national and regional prevention strategies worldwide; one that Guam has found to be valuable for helping caregivers learn suicide first aid by recognizing the risks and learning how to intervene and prevent the immediate risk of suicide. ASIST is reportedly the most widely used suicide intervention model in the world and features the only full model of the suicide intervention process. Since 1985, ASIST has been delivered to over one million caregivers in more than ten countries and is for all caregivers (any person in a position of trust) to include professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for primary care and behavioral health professionals, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, adult workers, police and correctional staff, clergy, and community volunteers. It is the approved training program for the Army and extensively used by the Air Force.
