Neuroscience of the Adolescent Brain Development Training

On April 3 and 4, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. GBHWC is coordinating and hosting Neuroscience of the Adolescent Brain Development Training that will be facilitated by Karen Williams. Venue TBA. 

April 3 and 5 - Two Full-Day Workshops - 6 Hours Each  - Each with the Same Content: "The Neuroscience of Trauma"

  • April 3 for Guam Behavioral Health staff
  • April 5 for the staffs of partnering agencies and organizations. 
  • Objectives - Participants will be able to:
    • Name three findings from the ACE Study
    • Describe how neuroplasticity works  
    • Name the primary neurotransmitters and hormones that are linked to development and behavior
    • Describe how the brain develops and what disrupts development
    • Describe the purpose of behavior and the role of needs
    • Explain the role of temperament in mediating the impact of trauma
    • Explain the relationship of unmitigated distress to behavioral health problems
    • Name the site of the “Second Brain” and why it is important
    • Link the “Second Brain” findings to emotional, social and behavioral health outcomes
    • Name three ways the adolescent brain differs from the adult brain
    • Name three challenges unique to dealing with adolescent parents
    • Name the three drives of adolescence that can be used to build protective factors for them and their children

April 4 - One Full Day Planning Session to Apply the Workshop Content -  6 Hours:  The Guam Behavioral Health staff who participated in the full-day workshop on April 3 will receive supplemental information and engage in a guided planning discussion:

  • Objectives:
    • Identify the policies and practices impacted by the workshop content,
    • Discuss the implications and possible applications of the workshop content
    • Teams develop a basic "next steps" plan. 

 

April 6 and 7 - Four Half Day Planning Sessions to Apply the Workshop Content - 3 Hours Each:  Partnering agencies and organizations will be assigned to one of the four planning sessions. Teams from the partnering agencies and organizations, who participated in the full-day workshop on April 5, will receive supplemental information and engage in a guided planning discussion.    

  • Objectives:
    • Identify the policies and practices impacted by the workshop content,
    • Discuss the implications and possible applications of the workshop content
    • Teams develop a basic "next steps" plan.
